Active Power Joins HP Data Center Solution Builders Program
AUSTIN, Texas--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--Active Power, Inc. (NASDAQ: ACPW), inventor and manufacturer of the most energy-efficient uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems in the world1, has joined the HP Data Center Solution Builders Program. Under the terms of the agreement, Active Power will offer its PowerHouse solution, a containerized power and cooling architecture, for the HP Performance Optimized Data Center (POD). Active Power will make available a standard sized 450 kW configuration that can power a single HP POD, as well as configurable solutions that can power several HP PODs.
"Organizations are expressing more and more interest in highly flexible and energy efficient turnkey IT solutions due to the extended time and high costs required to build or even update and expand existing data centers," said Nik Simpson, senior analyst, Data Center Strategies, Burton Group. "Customers want OEMs and infrastructure providers who can help them rapidly expand data center capacity in support of IT and business growth, but also balance capital expenditures and operating expenses."
Active Power has leveraged its flywheel UPS technology in the PowerHouse design. PowerHouse is a rugged, space efficient and complete continuous power system that can include a standby generator, high efficiency flywheel UPS system, chiller and switchgear. These systems can and have been used for a variety of applications including space constrained facilities, modular power expansion, rental fleet, disaster recovery and short term business operations.
"As part of HP's Data Center Solution Builders Program, Active Power is now able to offer HP POD customers one of the most energy and space efficient and reliable power and cooling solutions in the world," said Jim Clishem, president and CEO, Active Power.
"Especially in today's economic environment, data center owners are looking for ways to reduce both capital and operating expenses," said Steve Cumings, director of Infrastructure, Scalable Computing and Infrastructure, HP. "The combination of Active Power's PowerHouse solution and the HP POD enables customers to add data center capacity as they need it, and deploy much faster than with traditional brick-and-mortar construction."
"This collaboration places HP and Active Power in a strong position to help customers successfully deploy data centers economically and rapidly," continued Clishem. "Customers can reduce capital expenditures on electrical and mechanical infrastructure by approximately 25 percent and total cost of ownership by approximately 60 percent. This is in addition to the benefits of the HP POD."
The HP Data Center Solution Builders Program is a worldwide program between HP and leading data center infrastructure firms. The goals of the program are to develop and deliver new technologies as well as services targeted towards energy conservation and other operational improvements in data center operation or management.
