Starbucks workers expand strike in US cities, including New York
- The union is striking in 10 cities, also including Columbus, Ohio; Denver and Pittsburgh, during the holiday season, which might impact Christmas sales.
Starbucks workers in the U.S. are expanding their strike to include more cities such as New York, Seattle, and Chicago, as part of a broader push for better wages, improved working conditions, and union recognition. This strike, which began in November, has now grown to involve over 200 stores and more than 3,500 workers, making it one of the largest labor actions in Starbucks' history. The workers, supported by the Starbucks Workers United union, are protesting against what they describe as unfair labor practices, including the company's refusal to negotiate in good faith. Starbucks, on the other hand, claims it has made significant wage and benefit improvements and is open to dialogue, but insists on direct negotiations without union involvement. The strike coincides with the busy holiday season, aiming to leverage the increased customer traffic to amplify their demands.
