The Malawian government has announced an increase in the monthly Social Cash Transfer (SCT) program, raising the amount from K15,000 to K19,000 per household. This adjustment aims to better support the country's most vulnerable populations amidst rising living costs. The decision was revealed by Minister of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare, Jean Sendeza, during a press briefing in Lilongwe. The SCT program, which has been operational since 2006, targets the ultra-poor and labor-constrained households, providing them with direct cash transfers to alleviate poverty. The increase in the transfer amount is part of the government's broader strategy to enhance social protection and ensure that the benefits keep pace with inflation and economic changes.
