Acra to remove NRIC numbers from Bizfile portal search, government apologises for lapse

The Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority (ACRA) of Singapore has announced the removal of NRIC numbers from its BizFile+ portal following a security lapse that exposed the personal data of approximately 14,000 business owners. This decision was made after it was discovered that the NRIC numbers were visible in search results, potentially compromising the privacy of individuals. The government has issued an apology for the oversight, acknowledging the breach as a significant lapse in data protection. ACRA is now working to enhance its security measures to prevent future incidents, and has urged affected individuals to monitor their personal information closely for any signs of misuse. Additionally, the government has committed to reviewing and strengthening data protection policies across all public sector digital services.
