Currently, retail and wholesale traders, who were included under the MSME definition in July 2021 and were allowed to register on the Udyam portal, are eligible for access to credit only under priority sector lending norms.
The Retailers Association of India (RAI) has urged the government to extend all benefits currently available to MSMEs to retailers as well, in anticipation of the Union Budget 2025. RAI emphasized the need for a low-cost finance scheme tailored for retailers, highlighting that the sector has been underserved in terms of financial support. They propose that retailers should be eligible for the same credit guarantee schemes and interest subvention benefits as MSMEs. Additionally, RAI seeks the establishment of a dedicated fund to support retail businesses, aiming to foster growth and sustainability in the retail sector. This call for parity in benefits comes as part of broader demands to enhance the retail industry's competitiveness and resilience.
