READING, Pa., Sept. 16, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The three winners of the energy efficiency Home Makeover Contest from Metropolitan Edison Company (Met-Ed), Pennsylvania Electric Company (Penelec) and Pennsylvania Power Company (Penn Power), FirstEnergy's (NYSE: [ FE ]) utilities, have been identified.

Winners will receive up to $10,000 each in energy efficiency upgrades for their homes.  They are:

  • The Tsihlis family of Bangor, Pa. (Met-Ed service area)
  • The Muchesko family of Seward, Pa. (Penelec service area)
  • The Paolini family of New Castle, Pa. (Penn Power service area)

The Home Energy Makeover Contest highlights the impact of energy efficient upgrades on increased comfort and savings.  Winners were determined based on the greatest potential for energy savings through professional audits and home-energy improvements.

Nearly 400 homes were entered into the contest, and 15 finalists were selected based on their potential for dramatic improvements in energy efficiency.  These finalists received expert energy audits from local technicians using comprehensive home energy software to identify the most cost-effective strategies for reducing energy use and saving money.  Cost-effective improvements will be installed by certified local contractors who specialize in energy efficient construction.

The Whole House Program from FirstEnergy's utilities uses expert diagnostic testing and emerging home energy software, which allows certified energy experts to predict energy savings for any number of possible home improvements.  These experts can develop comprehensive recommendations based on the results of a two- to three-hour personalized audit, after which homeowners can choose their preferred improvements to fit their budget.
