AKRON, Ohio, Sept. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: [ FE ]), has announced management changes designed to align resources to drive improvement initiatives across its nuclear fleet.

Kevin Ostrowski has been named vice president of Fleet Oversight, succeeding Karen Fili, who has been named director of Fleet Operations Support.  In addition, Fred Cayia has been named director of Fleet Performance Improvement.

As vice president of Fleet Oversight, Ostrowski is responsible for management of FENOC's fleet and site Oversight and Assessment groups and the Employee Concerns Program.  Collectively, these groups assure quality performance at FENOC through audits, assessments and other vehicles for performance monitoring.

Ostrowski's 31-year nuclear career began at the Shippingport Atomic Power Station in Shippingport, Pennsylvania.  He has held management positions at all three FENOC nuclear sites, including director of Fleet Operations Support and director of Beaver Valley Site Operations.  He also was a loaned executive to the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), where he served as an organizational effectiveness team leader for numerous plant evaluations.

Ostrowski will build on the effective nuclear oversight organization established by Fili, who most recently led FENOC's Fleet Oversight group.  In her new role of director of Fleet Operations Support, Fili will oversee FENOC's fleet Radiation Protection, Chemistry, Operations, Outage Management, Work Management and Maintenance groups.

Fili joined FENOC in 2007 as director of Fleet Project Management.  Prior to FENOC, she served as Nuclear Projects manager for Entergy's Cooper Nuclear Station.  Her other previous experience includes managerial and supervisory roles in Mechanical Maintenance, Site Support and Engineering Support for the River Bend and Grand Gulf stations in Entergy's nuclear fleet.

In the new position of director of Fleet Performance Improvement, Cayia will oversee the fleet's Corrective Action Program, Emergency Preparedness and Training groups.  He will also lead implementation of the fleet's Information Technology strategies.

With more than 35-years nuclear experience, Cayia joined FENOC in 2005 as director of Performance Improvement at Perry and was named FENOC's director of Fleet Operations Support in 2010.  Prior to FENOC, he held various management positions including site vice president and plant manager at Point Beach Nuclear Plant in Wisconsin and held leadership roles with Maine Yankee Atomic Power Company.  Cayia also served as an evaluation team manager at INPO and as operations expert on the U.S. Department of Energy International Nuclear Safety Program working in Russia and Ukraine following the Chernobyl accident.
