aThe issuance of the FSER for VC Summer is a significant positive step forward in our stated goal of providing carbon free energy to the state of South Carolina,a said Bill Timmerman, Chairman and CEO of SCANA. aOur nuclear strategy is progressing as expected. South Carolinaa™s regulatory structure has proven sound and the federal approval process is progressing as anticipated. We are pleased to have accomplished another step in this process which will allow us to continue to provide safe and reliable electricity to the citizens of South Carolina.a
Previously, the NRC staff issued the FSER for the Westinghouse AP1000 reactor design that SCE&G selected for the new units. NRC approval of the AP1000 now moves forward to the rulemaking process. Issuance of SCE&Ga™s COL is dependent upon completion of the rulemaking process, as well as a mandatory hearing. Completion of the FSER for SCE&Ga™s new units is a prerequisite for the mandatory hearing process to begin. The schedule continues to support NRC approval of the COL within the companya™s previously announced timeframe of late 2011 or early 2012.
