NRC Issues FSER for AP1000 Design

CAYCE, S.C.--([ BUSINESS WIRE ])--South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G), principal subsidiary of SCANA Corporation (NYSE:SCG), has received notification from Westinghouse Electric Company that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is issuing its Final Safety Evaluation Report (FSER) on the Design Control Document (DCD) Revision 19 AP1000 design. SCE&G has chosen the AP1000 design for its two new nuclear units at V. C. Summer Station in Jenkinsville, SC.

The FSER comes after a public comment period and includes the NRC Staffa™s evaluation and ultimate concurrence with all AP1000 design changes included in DCD Revision 18 and the confirmatory Revision 19. The NRC will now conduct a rulemaking process for granting of the design certification rule. Issuance of the COL for SCE&Ga™s new nuclear units is subject to completion of the rulemaking process.

Previously, the NRC staff concluded that SCE&Ga™s application for a combined operating license is complete and provided a revised schedule supporting the issuance of the FSER for SCE&Ga™s units in September 2011. After issuing SCE&Ga™s FSER, the NRC will begin a mandatory hearing process. The schedule continues to support NRC approval of the COL within the companya™s previously announced timeframe.
