Calling 8-1-1 Before You Dig Saves Time and Money
UNION, N.J., Aug. 11, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- So far this year, 16 incidents of damage to Elizabethtown Gas pipelines, costing time and money, could have been prevented if the homeowner or professional contractor dialed 8-1-1 prior to digging.
Elizabethtown Gas is reminding everyone today – 8/11 – to dial 8-1-1 before starting any landscaping and outdoor projects that require digging or excavating.
The Call-Before-You-Dig hotline reminder promotes National 811 Day, a day set aside to create awareness of buried utility lines and the use of the free locating service to ensure public safety and continuity of service.
"Today and throughout the year we encourage homeowners and professional contractors to take the first step by making this quick and easy phone call," said Don Carter, vice president, Elizabethtown Gas. "Exercising caution when digging around gas lines and other buried utility lines not only ensures personal safety but is important in helping maintain reliable service and prevent costly damage."
Residents and contractors should dial 8-1-1 to connect callers to the New Jersey One Call damage prevention center at least three business days before digging. Through the free service, One Call personnel will notify the affected utility companies, who then send technicians to mark the approximate location of buried facilities.
