NEWARK, N.J., Aug. 17, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) dispatched 53 gas employees to New York City today to help Con Edison restore gas service following a water main break that damaged a 12-inch gas main in the Hamilton Heights section of upper Manhattan on August 12. Con Edison had to shut off gas service to thousands of customers when water flooded the main. The NY utility had reached out to PSE&G on Monday and requested the assistance.    

The PSE&G contingent includes 30 technicians, six 3-person street crews and five supervisors, who will help Con Edison workers pump water out of the main, perform piping integrity tests in buildings and re-light gas appliances once the water main and gas system are repaired. Restoring gas service to customers will be challenging because the area affected is densely populated with many large buildings. Technicians will need to visit each apartment to re-light gas appliances. PSE&G crews are expected to assist Con Edison until at least Sunday.

Mutual aid is an arrangement between utilities that allows for the sharing of resources such as labor and equipment during emergencies. The hosting utility reimburses for associated costs.
