India has ordered Samsung and its executives in the country to pay $601 million in back taxes and penalties for dodging tariffs on import of key telecoms equipment, a government order showed, for one of the biggest such demands in recent years.

India has issued a tax demand of 49.9 billion rupees ($601 million) to Samsung Electronics for the period from 2019 to 2023, related to the import of telecom equipment. The tax notice, which includes penalties and interest, was issued by the Directorate General of GST Intelligence in Pune. Samsung has the option to appeal this demand, and the company has stated that it will take appropriate actions in response to the notice. This development comes amidst India's efforts to increase scrutiny on multinational corporations' tax practices, particularly concerning imports and transfer pricing.
