The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) on Thursday ordered payments firm Block to pay a penalty citing fraud and weak security protocols on its mobile payment service Cash App.

The U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has ordered Block Inc.'s payment processing unit, Block, to pay $175 million in fines and consumer redress for various violations. The CFPB found that Block had processed transactions for entities involved in fraudulent activities, including illegal online payday lenders and fraudulent debt collectors, without adequately monitoring or preventing such activities. Additionally, Block was accused of withholding information from banks about high-risk clients, which facilitated the processing of illegal transactions. The fine includes $145 million for consumer redress and a $30 million penalty. Block, formerly known as Square, has agreed to the order without admitting or denying the allegations. This action marks one of the largest penalties ever imposed by the CFPB, highlighting significant issues in the payment processing industry's oversight of client activities.
