Swiss central bank posts record 2024 profit of nearly $90 billion

The Swiss National Bank posted a record annual profit of 80.7 billion Swiss francs ($89.50 billion) in 2024, the central bank said on Monday, riding on the back of booming equity markets, rising gold prices and a stronger U.

The Swiss National Bank (SNB) reported a significant profit of 807 billion Swiss francs for the year 2024, as announced on March 3, 2025. This substantial profit was largely due to a recovery in the value of its foreign currency investments, which had previously incurred losses. The SNB's financial results were bolstered by a 58.8 billion Swiss franc profit from foreign currency positions, a 3.3 billion Swiss franc profit from Swiss franc positions, and an additional 1.7 billion Swiss francs from its stake in the Bank for International Settlements. Despite these gains, the SNB emphasized the importance of maintaining a robust equity base to absorb potential future losses, highlighting the volatility in financial markets. The bank also noted that its monetary policy remains focused on ensuring price stability, with the possibility of intervening in currency markets to influence the Swiss franc's value.
