ATO Releases Super Checklist to Ease Burden on Businesses

Canberra, Australia - April 5th, 2026 - The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has today released a comprehensive 'Payday Super Checklist' designed to streamline the superannuation payment process for businesses, with a particular focus on alleviating the compliance burden faced by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The launch represents a significant step in the ATO's ongoing effort to improve ease of doing business while ensuring employees receive their entitled superannuation benefits.

The checklist, now available on the ATO website, isn't just a simple list of tasks. It's a guided process designed to walk employers through every critical step of calculating and remitting superannuation contributions with each payroll run. This move comes as recent ATO data indicates a disproportionate number of superannuation errors originate from SMEs - often due to complexities in payroll systems, differing employment arrangements (casual, part-time, full-time), and simply a lack of readily accessible, clear guidance.

For years, SMEs have voiced concerns about the intricacies of the Superannuation Guarantee (SG) system. Calculating SG contributions accurately, understanding eligible earnings, and adhering to strict payment schedules have proven particularly challenging. The consequences of non-compliance can be substantial, ranging from penalties and interest charges to legal action. The ATO hopes this checklist will proactively address these issues before they escalate.

"We've listened to feedback from businesses and understand that navigating the superannuation landscape can be complex," stated ATO Deputy Commissioner, Emma Howard, in a press conference this morning. "This checklist is a practical tool, designed to be used alongside existing resources, to help employers get it right from the start. It's about preventative measures, not just reactive enforcement."

The checklist itself focuses on several key areas. It prompts employers to verify employee details - ensuring accurate Tax File Numbers (TFNs) are recorded - and clearly defines eligible earnings that are subject to SG contributions. Crucially, it highlights the difference between gross earnings and ordinary time earnings (OTE), a common point of confusion that often leads to underpayment of super. It also incorporates a step-by-step guide to calculating the correct SG contribution rate, which currently stands at 11% (with planned increases to 12% in subsequent years) and provides links to the ATO's SG eligibility checker. Furthermore, the checklist reinforces the importance of keeping accurate records of all superannuation payments - a vital requirement for audit purposes.

This new initiative isn't occurring in a vacuum. The ATO has significantly ramped up its digital assistance tools for businesses in recent years. Single Touch Payroll (STP), introduced in 2018, has already automated a large portion of the superannuation reporting process. However, the ATO acknowledges that STP, while efficient, doesn't eliminate the need for employers to understand their underlying obligations. The checklist complements STP by ensuring employers understand what data is being reported and why.

Industry groups have largely welcomed the ATO's move. The Council of Small Business Owners Australia (COSBOA) praised the checklist as a "practical and much-needed resource." "Many of our members struggle with superannuation compliance, not through malice, but simply because they're busy running their businesses," said COSBOA CEO, Alex Hamilton. "A clear, concise checklist like this will be invaluable."

The ATO plans to further expand its support offerings for businesses in the coming months, including webinars and online training modules specifically focused on superannuation. They are also exploring integration of the checklist into popular accounting software packages, providing businesses with an even more seamless experience. The ATO spokesperson emphasized that consistent adherence to the checklist will not only reduce errors but also build trust within the superannuation system, ultimately benefiting both employers and employees.
