  • Tennessee Sen. Kenneth Yager's recent arrest while driving a campaign-funded car on a Georgia vacation sheds renewed light on the pitfalls of lawmakers' practice of dipping into campaign finances to lease or purchase vehicles.

Tennessee State Senator Ken Yager has decided to refund $16,000 in campaign contributions following an investigation by the Tennessee Registry of Election Finance. The investigation revealed that Yager had accepted contributions exceeding the legal limit of $4,900 per election cycle from several donors. Yager, who has served in the state Senate since 2008, acknowledged the oversight and stated that the excess funds would be returned to the donors. The contributions in question were made during the 2022 election cycle, and the senator's campaign treasurer, Sharon Jernigan, admitted to the error, attributing it to a misunderstanding of the campaign finance laws. The refunds are expected to be processed promptly to comply with state regulations.
