AKRON, Ohio, June 27, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company (FENOC), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: [ FE ]), broke ground today for a new Emergency Operations Facility in Beaver Falls, Pa., for the Beaver Valley Power Station.

The 12,000 square-foot facility will allow for improved coordination between the plant and state and local emergency management agencies.  Personnel will utilize state-of-the-art equipment to monitor environmental conditions and communicate with state and local emergency representatives.  The facility also will be used during quarterly training drills and bi-annual emergency exercises evaluated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Construction is expected to be completed in January 2012.  Until then, the current Emergency Operations Facility located at Beaver Valley will remain operational.

"FENOC and Beaver Valley have a long-standing commitment to protect public health and safety," said Paul Harden, vice president of Beaver Valley.  "The new facility underscores that commitment to the community and will ensure our responsibility is fully upheld."
