Halifax taking steps toward diversity and inclusion, but oversight is needed: Auditor General

An audit has found the Halifax Regional Municipality is attempting to take steps toward meeting its diversity and inclusion goals, but more monitoring is needed to track the progress.
The Halifax Auditor General's report, released on January 10, 2024, highlights significant issues with the city's approach to diversity and inclusion. The audit found that Halifax lacks a comprehensive strategy to address these areas, with no clear goals, performance measures, or accountability mechanisms in place. Despite having a diversity and inclusion framework since 2016, the city has not effectively implemented it, leading to a lack of progress in creating an inclusive environment. The report criticizes the city for not adequately tracking or reporting on diversity initiatives, and for not having a dedicated staff member to oversee these efforts. It recommends that Halifax develop a strategic plan with specific, measurable objectives to enhance diversity and inclusion, and to ensure that these efforts are properly resourced and monitored.
