  • State-run Indian Railways has spent more than $22 billion so far in the current fiscal year, focusing on projects to expand capacity and deliver faster and safer travel to passengers, the government said on Wednesday.

Indian Railways plans to invest over $22 billion in the next five years to modernize its infrastructure, aiming to enhance safety, increase capacity, and improve passenger amenities. This investment will focus on several key areas: upgrading tracks, signaling systems, and rolling stock, as well as expanding the network with new lines and doubling existing ones. The initiative includes the introduction of advanced safety features like the 'Kavach' system, designed to prevent train collisions. Additionally, there will be a significant push towards electrification, with a goal to electrify 75% of its broad gauge network by 2025, reducing both operational costs and environmental impact. The modernization drive also encompasses the development of world-class stations, better sanitation, and improved passenger services, aligning with the government's broader vision to transform Indian Railways into a modern, efficient, and safe transport system.
