Maersk asks customers to remove cargo before potential strike at US ports
- Shipping giant AP Moller-Maersk has urged customers to pick up their laden containers and return the empty ones at the U.S. East and Gulf Coast ports before Jan. 15 to mitigate potential disruptions at the terminals on account of a strike.
Maersk, a major shipping company, has advised its customers to remove their cargo from U.S. ports by December 31, 2024, in anticipation of a potential strike by the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA), which represents dockworkers at East and Gulf Coast ports. The ILA has threatened to strike if a new labor contract is not agreed upon by the end of the year, potentially disrupting operations at key ports like New York/New Jersey, Savannah, and Houston. This warning comes as negotiations between the ILA and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) have stalled, with the union expressing concerns over automation and job security. Maersk's notice aims to mitigate the risk of cargo being stranded or delayed due to labor actions, urging customers to expedite cargo clearance and consider alternative logistics solutions.
