BERWICK, Pa., June 19, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Operators at the Susquehanna nuclear power plant performed a planned and controlled shutdown of the Unit 1 reactor Tuesday (6/19) morning to investigate the source of a minor water leak inside the containment structure that surrounds the reactor.

"The leak does not affect the safety of the plant or the public," said Timothy S. Rausch, PPL's chief nuclear officer. "We made the prudent decision to shut down the unit while the leak is small and will return it to service after we make the needed repairs."

Unit 2 is operating at full power.

The two units at the Susquehanna plant have a generating capacity of about 2,500 megawatts.

The Susquehanna plant, located in Luzerne County about seven miles north of Berwick, is owned jointly by PPL Susquehanna LLC and Allegheny Electric Cooperative Inc. and is operated by PPL Susquehanna LLC.
