Orleans Man with Dementia Missing, Search Enters Third Day

Orleans, MA - April 9th, 2026 - The search for David Levasseur, a 63-year-old Orleans resident suffering from dementia, entered its third day today, with authorities expanding the scope of the operation to encompass a wider area around Skaket Beach. Levasseur was last seen on Monday, April 8th, 2026, prompting a rapid response from the Orleans Police Department and a groundswell of volunteer support.
Police initiated the search after receiving a missing person report late Monday afternoon. According to family members, Levasseur enjoys regular walks near Skaket Beach, a popular destination on Cape Cod. However, he failed to return home, raising immediate concerns given his diagnosis of dementia and reliance on vital medication.
The current search operation is a multi-faceted effort. K-9 units specializing in scent detection are meticulously combing the beach and surrounding wooded areas, focusing on trails Levasseur is known to frequent. A dive team is currently conducting underwater searches of nearshore waters, exploring the possibility he may have entered the ocean. Several volunteer groups, organized through local community networks and the Cape Cod Search and Rescue organization, are assisting with grid searches of the area, distributing flyers with Levasseur's photograph and description.
"We are treating this as a critical situation," stated Police Chief Sarah Miller during a press conference held this morning at the Orleans Police Station. "Mr. Levasseur's medical condition is a major factor in our urgency. Without his medication, his disorientation and vulnerability increase significantly. Every minute counts."
Levasseur is described as a white male, approximately 5'10" tall, weighing around 170 pounds, with gray hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a navy blue jacket, khaki pants, and brown walking shoes. Authorities have emphasized that he may not respond to his name or recognize familiar faces due to the effects of his dementia. The Orleans Police Department is actively working with neighboring towns - Eastham, Brewster, and Chatham - to extend the search perimeter and coordinate resources.
The incident highlights the growing challenges faced by communities as the population ages and the prevalence of dementia increases. According to the Alzheimer's Association, over 6.7 million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer's disease, the most common cause of dementia. Individuals with dementia are at a significantly higher risk of wandering and becoming lost, particularly if they are unfamiliar with their surroundings or experience heightened anxiety.
Local advocacy groups for dementia patients are offering support to the Levasseur family and are utilizing the search as an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of proactive safety measures. These measures include registering individuals with dementia in programs like the Safe Return program offered by the Alzheimer's Association, which provides identification bracelets and a 24/7 emergency response line. They also advocate for the use of GPS tracking devices to help monitor the location of individuals prone to wandering.
The Orleans Police Department is appealing to residents and visitors to remain vigilant. Anyone who may have seen Levasseur, or who has information regarding his whereabouts, is urged to contact the department immediately at (508) 255-0525. Even seemingly insignificant details could prove crucial in bringing Levasseur home safely. The department has established a dedicated tip line and encourages the public to share any relevant information, no matter how minor it may seem. The community has rallied around the search, with local businesses posting flyers and social media groups actively sharing information and coordinating volunteer efforts. The hope is that with continued effort and public support, David Levasseur will be found safe and returned to his family soon.
