BYU Creamery Reopens After Multi-Year Revamp
Locale: UNITED STATES

PROVO, Utah - February 15, 2026 - Brigham Young University (BYU) officially unveiled its state-of-the-art Creamery on Saturday, marking the culmination of a multi-year project designed to revitalize a cornerstone of campus life and a cherished local institution. The grand opening drew crowds of students, alumni, faculty, and community members eager to experience the next generation of BYU's iconic dairy destination.
The original Creamery, a beloved fixture since 1923, had long served as a gathering place and a source of high-quality dairy products. However, the aging facility struggled to meet the demands of a growing university population and a public increasingly interested in locally-sourced, artisanal foods. The decision to rebuild, rather than simply renovate, reflected BYU's commitment to preserving the Creamery's legacy while significantly enhancing its capabilities.
"This isn't just about a new building; it's about honoring a tradition," explained BYU President Kevin Worthen during the opening ceremony. "For generations, the Creamery has been a place where students connect, families create memories, and our community enjoys some of the best dairy products around. This new facility allows us to build upon that foundation and provide an even more enriching experience for everyone."
The new Creamery is a dramatic departure from its predecessor. The facility boasts a cutting-edge production facility, meticulously designed for efficiency and quality control. Visitors can now observe the entire dairy process - from pasteurization to ice cream churning - through a spacious viewing area, offering a fascinating "behind-the-scenes" look at how BYU's famous treats are made. This transparency adds a new educational dimension to the Creamery experience, aligning with BYU's academic mission.
The retail space has also undergone a significant transformation. While the original Creamery offered a limited selection of ice cream and cheese, the new store features an expanded range of dairy products, including seasonal flavors, specialty cheeses, and locally-sourced accompaniments like honey and fruit preserves. A curated selection of BYU-branded gifts and souvenirs has also been added, providing visitors with more opportunities to take a piece of the Creamery experience home with them.
The project's success is largely attributable to robust community engagement and generous private donations. BYU administrators actively sought input from students and alumni throughout the planning process, ensuring that the new Creamery met the needs and desires of those it serves. The fundraising campaign, which launched in 2024, exceeded expectations, demonstrating the deep affection the community holds for the Creamery.
Beyond providing delicious treats, the Creamery plays an important role in BYU's educational programs. Students in the Food Science department regularly use the facility for research and hands-on learning, gaining valuable experience in dairy production, food safety, and quality control. The expanded production capacity of the new Creamery will allow for even more research opportunities and potentially facilitate the development of innovative dairy products.
Looking ahead, BYU officials envision the Creamery becoming a destination for culinary tourism in Utah County. They plan to host workshops, demonstrations, and special events to attract visitors from across the region. The university is also exploring partnerships with local restaurants and businesses to showcase BYU Creamery products in their establishments.
The impact of the new Creamery extends beyond the university campus. It's a testament to the enduring power of tradition, the importance of community engagement, and the deliciousness of a well-made scoop of ice cream. As the sun set on the grand opening celebration, one thing was clear: the BYU Creamery is poised to remain a beloved landmark for generations to come, continuing to sweeten the lives of students, alumni, and the community for years to come.
