WeightWatchers files for bankruptcy as it struggles for a place in a weight loss world dominated by Ozempic and Wegovy

WeightWatchers, officially known as WW International, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as it struggles to adapt to the rise of new weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, which have shifted consumer preferences away from traditional diet and lifestyle programs. The company, which has been a leader in the weight management industry for over six decades, reported a significant decline in membership and revenue, exacerbated by the popularity of these new medications that offer a more direct approach to weight loss. In an effort to stay competitive, WeightWatchers acquired Sequence, a telehealth platform that prescribes these drugs, but the move came too late to prevent the company's financial downturn. The bankruptcy filing allows WeightWatchers to restructure its debts and potentially emerge as a more agile player in the evolving weight management market.
