  • Chemical firm Dow and X-energy Reactor Company have submitted a construction permit application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for a proposed nuclear project in Seadrift, Texas, the companies said on Monday.

Dow Inc. and X-Energy Reactor Co. have jointly applied for a construction permit from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to build a high-temperature, gas-cooled nuclear reactor at Dow's Seadrift site in Texas. This project, known as Project Pele, aims to produce electricity and steam for industrial applications, marking a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions in the chemical manufacturing sector. The reactor, designed by X-Energy, is part of a broader initiative to reduce carbon emissions by replacing traditional fossil fuel-based energy sources with nuclear power. The application process is expected to take about 18 months, with construction potentially starting in 2026 if approved. This move not only supports Dow's commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 but also highlights the growing interest in advanced nuclear technologies for industrial decarbonization.
