  • Germany's Allianz Global Investors has dropped two exclusions blocking its sustainable funds from investing in defence, becoming one of the first major European asset managers to change their policies to help finance the region's rearmament.

Allianz, one of Europe's largest insurers, has decided to remove exclusions for nuclear and military risks from its insurance policies starting in 2025, aligning with Europe's rearmament efforts amid heightened geopolitical tensions. This strategic shift aims to support the defense industry by providing necessary insurance coverage, which was previously restricted due to the inherent risks involved. The move comes as European nations, particularly Germany, increase defense spending in response to threats like Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Allianz's decision reflects a broader trend where insurers are adapting to geopolitical changes, potentially influencing other insurers to follow suit. This change also addresses the growing demand for insurance in the defense sector, which has been facing challenges in securing coverage for military equipment and operations.
