  • French government plans to increase defence spending must be designed in a way that does not push strained public finances off course, Finance Minister Eric Lombard said on Wednesday.

The French Finance Minister, Bruno Le Maire, has emphasized the importance of maintaining fiscal responsibility while increasing defense spending in response to global security threats. Speaking at the World Policy Conference in Abu Dhabi, Le Maire highlighted that France must not let its defense build-up derail its financial stability. He pointed out the necessity of adapting to a world where security threats are escalating, particularly due to conflicts like the war in Ukraine. Le Maire stressed that while defense is crucial, France should not abandon its economic strategy, which includes reducing the public deficit to 2.7% of GDP by 2027. He also mentioned the need for Europe to enhance its defense capabilities independently, suggesting that Europe should not rely solely on the U.S. for security, and advocated for a stronger European defense industry.
