John Krafcik, the former CEO of Waymo, has expressed skepticism about Tesla's ability to compete in the robotaxi market despite Elon Musk's ambitions. In an interview, Krafcik highlighted that while Tesla has made significant strides in autonomous driving technology, it lacks the comprehensive mapping and sensor suite that Waymo has developed over years. He pointed out that Tesla's approach relies heavily on vision-based systems and less on the detailed, pre-mapped environments that Waymo uses, which he believes gives Waymo a competitive edge in terms of safety and reliability. Krafcik also mentioned the complexity of urban driving environments, suggesting that Tesla's current technology might not be sufficient to handle the unpredictable nature of city streets as effectively as Waymo's system. Despite these comments, he acknowledged Tesla's innovation but maintained that the nuances of full autonomy require more than what Tesla currently offers.
