  • It's the end of a (free) era: Southwest Airlines will begin charging for checked bags at the end of May.

Southwest Airlines has discontinued its EarlyBird Check-In perk, which previously allowed passengers to check in 36 hours before a flight for an additional fee, securing an earlier boarding position and potentially better seat selection. This change affects travelers who valued the convenience of automatic check-in. However, there are still ways to gain similar benefits without extra costs: Southwest's Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card offers free EarlyBird Check-In on up to four flights per year, and the Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card provides two EarlyBird Check-Ins annually. Additionally, passengers can still check in exactly 24 hours before their flight for free, or opt for Business Select or Anytime fares which include priority boarding. For those not interested in these options, arriving early at the airport to check in manually remains a viable strategy to secure a better boarding position.
