Swedish authorities have boarded the Hong Kong-flagged ship NewNew Polar Bear, which was seized in connection with a breach of a Baltic Sea telecom cable. The incident occurred on October 7-8, 2023, when the cable connecting Sweden and Estonia was damaged. The ship, which was en route from Russia to China, was detained in the Chinese port of Xingang. Swedish investigators are examining the ship's logbook, navigation equipment, and crew communications to understand the circumstances of the cable damage. The breach has raised concerns about the security of undersea infrastructure, especially following similar incidents involving the Nord Stream pipelines. The investigation is ongoing, with no definitive conclusions yet on whether the damage was intentional or accidental.
