  • A leading business lobby has raised alarm bells that Australia will be lacking in workers in critical industries unless we boost our lagging education standards.

The Business Council of Australia (BCA) has called for urgent reforms in the education system, highlighting a significant decline in Year 12 completion rates and a drop in Australia's global education rankings. According to the BCA, only 76% of students are now completing Year 12, down from 85% in 2012, which they argue is insufficient for a modern economy. The council's report, "Education for Prosperity," points out that Australia has fallen from 10th to 22nd in reading, 17th to 29th in science, and 12th to 33rd in mathematics in international rankings since 2000. BCA chief executive Jennifer Westacott emphasized the need for a national strategy to improve education standards, focusing on better teacher training, curriculum reform, and addressing the high rate of students not meeting basic literacy and numeracy standards. The BCA also criticized the lack of progress in education policy, noting that despite numerous reports and recommendations, there has been little action to address these critical issues.
