GM to exit loss-making Cruise robotaxi business

  • Automaker General Motors said on Tuesday its majority-owned Cruise business will drop the development of robotaxis.

General Motors (GM) has decided to discontinue the development of its Cruise Origin, a fully autonomous shuttle designed without traditional driving controls like a steering wheel or pedals. This decision comes as part of a broader strategy to focus on commercializing Cruise's current technology rather than expanding into new vehicle designs. The Cruise Origin, which was a collaboration between GM, Cruise, and Honda, aimed to provide a new form of transportation but has been shelved to prioritize the deployment of Cruise's existing robotaxi service. This shift in focus also includes laying off staff from the project, as GM aims to streamline operations and reduce costs amidst a challenging economic environment and regulatory scrutiny over autonomous vehicle safety.
