  Sir Peter Mason, who has died aged 78, was a leader of the civil engineering industry as chairman of Balfour Beatty and chief executive of Amec; he was also chairman of Thames Water and a senior director of BAE Systems.

Sir Peter Mason, who passed away at the age of 77, was a prominent figure in the civil engineering sector, having led major companies like Balfour Beatty and AMEC. His career began at George Wimpey in 1968, where he progressed to become the managing director of their international division. He later joined Balfour Beatty in 1982, eventually becoming its chief executive in 1993, during which he oversaw significant growth and acquisitions, including the purchase of BICC. After leaving Balfour Beatty in 2002, he took on the role of chairman at AMEC, guiding the company through a period of expansion and strategic acquisitions. Mason was also known for his contributions to the industry through various roles, including chairman of the Building Research Establishment and president of the Institution of Civil Engineers. His leadership was marked by a focus on international expansion and strategic corporate growth, leaving a lasting impact on the engineering and construction sectors.
