Disabled veterans also eligible for financial assistance

CHICAGO, Feb. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- ComEd is reminding customers that there is help available for disabled veterans and deployed active military personnel who are having difficulty paying their electric bills.

The CHAMP (ComEd Helps Activated Military Personnel) program provides bill-payment assistance to deployed members of the military and disabled veterans who reside within ComEd's northern Illinois service territory and demonstrate a need. CHAMP offers a package of benefits, including a cash stipend of up to $500 while funds are available, a deferred payment plan, extended payment due dates, exemption from late charges, deposit reduction and budget payment plans.

Launched in 2002, CHAMP was expanded in 2011 to offer benefits to disabled veterans. ComEd also offers other bill payment assistance programs to all eligible customers, including payment plans and budget billing.

To enroll in CHAMP or another of ComEd's bill-payment assistance programs, customers should call 1-888-806-CARE (2273), or download an application at [ www.ComEd.com/CARE ]. A copy of a discharge letter, along with either a disability award letter or social security disability letter are required to qualify for benefits.

ComEd's veteran-friendly business practices extend beyond bill payment assistance. In January 2009, ComEd's parent company, Exelon, established E-MAC (Exelon Militaries Actively Connected), an affinity group that promotes a positive work environment for employees with prior military service as well as for those who take an interest in military issues.

Commonwealth Edison Company (ComEd) is a unit of Chicago-based Exelon Corporation (NYSE: [ EXC ]), one of the nation's largest electric utilities with approximately 5.4 million customers. ComEd provides service to approximately 3.8 million customers across Northern Illinois, or 70 percent of the state's population.
