MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- While the immediate focus is on navigating the annual Thanksgiving travel surge, Memphis International Airport (MIA) is facing a fundamental shift: consistently higher passenger volumes that extend far beyond traditional holiday peaks. This year's Thanksgiving period is expected to be exceptionally busy, but airport officials and industry analysts suggest this is a symptom of a larger trend - a sustained recovery in air travel coupled with a burgeoning demand for both leisure and business trips.

Initial projections for the Thanksgiving week, beginning today, Saturday, February 14th, 2026, anticipate a 15-20% increase in passenger traffic compared to 2023. Gale Jones, spokesperson for MIA, confirmed the airport is bracing for a significant upswing, particularly on the traditionally busiest travel days - Wednesday and Sunday - but highlighted that this year, the elevated demand is noticeable throughout the entire week, and is already impacting early-week departures.

"We're expecting a pretty significant increase in passenger volume, not just compared to last year, but in line with a broader trend we've observed since the summer," Jones stated. "Families are eager to reunite for the holidays, of course, but we're also seeing a substantial rise in people traveling for extended vacations, 'shoulder season' trips, and even quick weekend getaways. The post-pandemic rebound has been stronger than anticipated, and Memphis is benefitting from increased connectivity and a growing reputation as a travel hub."

To proactively manage the increased flow, MIA is deploying a multi-faceted strategy. This includes increased staffing at security checkpoints, baggage handling, and customer service desks. Jones emphasized the temporary expansion of TSA pre-check lanes and the utilization of volunteer 'airport ambassadors' to assist passengers with wayfinding and information. Furthermore, the airport is closely coordinating with airlines to ensure efficient gate management and minimize potential delays. However, she reiterated the importance of passenger preparedness.

"We want to encourage our passengers to arrive at least three hours before their scheduled departure time, especially during peak hours," Jones advised. "This allows ample time for check-in, security screening, and navigating to their gate. Checking baggage adds further time, and unforeseen issues can always arise. Being prepared reduces stress for everyone involved."

Beyond the immediate Thanksgiving rush, MIA is actively investing in long-term infrastructure improvements to accommodate sustained growth. A major terminal renovation, slated for completion in late 2027, will increase gate capacity, modernize passenger amenities (including expanded dining and retail options), and streamline baggage handling systems. The airport is also exploring options for expanding parking facilities and improving ground transportation access, including enhanced bus and light rail connections to downtown Memphis.

The rise in travel volume isn't unique to Memphis. Nationally, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reported consistently high screening numbers throughout 2025, often exceeding pre-pandemic levels. Analysts attribute this to pent-up demand, increasing disposable income, and a growing desire for experiential travel. Memphis, however, is strategically positioned to capitalize on this trend, serving as a key connecting point for travelers in the Mid-South and beyond.

"Memphis is uniquely placed to cater to both point-to-point and connecting passengers," explains aviation consultant, Dr. Emily Carter. "Its central location and FedEx hub operations create a synergistic effect, fostering both passenger and cargo traffic. The airport's commitment to modernization and customer service will be crucial to sustaining this growth."

FOX13 will continue to provide live updates from MIA throughout the week, offering real-time information on traffic, wait times, and potential disruptions. Travelers are also encouraged to utilize the MIA's website and social media channels for the latest updates and travel advisories. The airport is advising passengers to check their airline's website for any specific policies or requirements related to baggage, check-in, or COVID-19 protocols, although those mandates are lessening with time.
