Costco Wholesale shareholders voted strongly against a proposal requesting a report on the risks of maintaining its diversity and inclusion initiatives, the U.S. company said on Thursday, sending a message running counter to the intense scrutiny many such corporate policies face.
At Costco Wholesale Corp's annual general meeting on January 23, 2025, shareholders voted against a proposal that would have required the company to report on its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. The proposal, which was put forward by the National Center for Public Policy Research, aimed to provide transparency on how Costco's DEI initiatives align with its risk mitigation strategies. Despite the push for more detailed reporting, the majority of shareholders decided against the measure, reflecting a broader debate on the role and impact of corporate diversity initiatives. Costco's management had recommended voting against the proposal, arguing that their existing DEI efforts were sufficient and that additional reporting would not provide significant benefits to shareholders.
