  • The former human resources manager at a charity that houses adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities pleaded guilty on Tuesday to embezzling nearly $700K from the organization.

A former finance manager, Nicole Marie Stevens, admitted to embezzling over $3 million from her employer, the Cowlitz Indian Tribe, by exploiting her position to manipulate payroll and vendor payments. Stevens, who worked for the tribe's business arm, Ilani Casino Resort, used the embezzled funds for personal expenses, including purchasing a home in Hawaii. She pleaded guilty to wire fraud and could face up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, with sentencing scheduled for June 27. The embezzlement was discovered after an internal audit, leading to Stevens' arrest and the recovery of some of the stolen funds.
