Reading Mayor Confident in City's Positive Momentum
Locale: UNITED STATES

READING, PA - January 31st, 2026 - Mayor Eddie Moran today reaffirmed his confidence in Reading's trajectory, stating the city is experiencing a significant surge in positive momentum that is laying the foundation for a brighter future. Speaking to reporters this morning, Mayor Moran elaborated on the progress made in recent years, outlining key initiatives and acknowledging both successes and remaining challenges.
Reading, a city with a rich history but also a past marked by economic hardship and social challenges, appears to be entering a new era. Mayor Moran attributes this shift to a multi-faceted approach focused on attracting investment, bolstering public safety, and fostering a stronger sense of community. "The energy in Reading is different now," he explained. "We are no longer simply addressing crises; we are actively building a city where opportunity flourishes and residents feel a genuine sense of belonging."
One of the most visible indicators of this change is the revitalization of downtown Reading. Several new businesses have opened their doors in the past year, filling vacant storefronts and injecting life into the city center. These aren't just small, local enterprises either. Moran highlighted the recent arrival of 'TechForward Solutions,' a regional tech firm that has committed to bringing over 200 jobs to the city, and the planned renovation of the historic Franklin Street Station into a mixed-use development featuring retail space, apartments, and a public transportation hub.
"These investments are a vote of confidence in Reading's potential," Moran stated. "They demonstrate that businesses see value in locating here, and they create economic opportunities for our residents." The city has been proactive in incentivizing this growth, offering tax breaks, streamlined permitting processes, and workforce development programs to support new and expanding businesses. However, Moran also stressed the importance of supporting existing small businesses, which form the backbone of the local economy. The city has expanded micro-loan programs and provides free business counseling services to entrepreneurs.
Beyond economic development, public safety remains a top priority. While crime rates have fluctuated, the city has seen a notable decrease in violent crime over the past six months. This is due, in part, to increased police presence in high-crime areas, but also to a greater emphasis on community policing and preventative measures. Moran's administration has invested in youth programs designed to provide at-risk youth with positive alternatives to gang involvement and has partnered with local organizations to address the root causes of crime, such as poverty and lack of opportunity.
Another key focus has been on improving the quality of life for all residents. The city has launched several initiatives to address issues such as affordable housing, access to healthcare, and environmental sustainability. Plans are underway to expand the city's park system, create more green spaces, and improve air quality. The city is also exploring innovative solutions to address the housing shortage, including incentivizing the development of affordable housing units and implementing inclusionary zoning policies.
Moran acknowledged that challenges remain. "We still have a significant amount of work to do to address the systemic issues that have plagued Reading for decades," he admitted. "But we are committed to tackling these challenges head-on and building a more equitable and prosperous city for all."
To that end, the Mayor's office is hosting a series of town hall meetings throughout February and March, providing residents with a platform to voice their concerns and provide feedback on city initiatives. A detailed schedule of these events can be found on the city's official website (www.readingpa.gov). Furthermore, the city is actively seeking input from residents through online surveys and social media engagement. The goal, Moran emphasized, is to ensure that the city's revitalization efforts are truly inclusive and reflect the needs and priorities of the entire community.
Looking ahead, Mayor Moran envisions a Reading that is a model of urban revitalization - a city that embraces its history while looking forward to a future filled with opportunity, innovation, and community pride. "This is not just about bricks and mortar," he concluded. "It's about building a stronger, more vibrant community where everyone has the chance to thrive."
