Greenville Walmart Linked to Measles Outbreak
Locale: UNITED STATES

GREENVILLE, S.C. - A confirmed case of measles linked to a Greenville Walmart has triggered a public health alert and renewed calls for vaccination across South Carolina. The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) is actively investigating a potential exposure incident at the Walmart Supercenter located at 4015 Laurens Road, urging anyone who visited the store between February 10th and February 17th, 2026, to be vigilant for symptoms.
This incident isn't an isolated event. Across the nation, health officials are observing a concerning uptick in measles cases, a trend not seen in over a decade. While the U.S. officially eliminated measles in 2000, imported cases - typically from travelers returning from regions where the virus remains prevalent - continue to pose a risk, and pockets of unvaccinated individuals create opportunities for localized outbreaks. The Greenville case is believed to be linked to an imported case, though DHEC has not yet released specifics on the source.
"Measles is incredibly contagious," explains Dr. Emily Carter, an infectious disease specialist at Greenville Memorial Hospital. "It's spread through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus can remain airborne for up to an hour, and even brief exposure can lead to infection in those who aren't protected."
The symptoms, typically appearing 7-14 days post-exposure, include a high fever, persistent cough, runny nose, and conjunctivitis (red, watery eyes). Crucially, a characteristic rash develops, usually starting on the face and spreading down the body. While the rash is often the most recognizable symptom, individuals are contagious before the rash appears, making early detection and containment challenging.
Complications from measles can be severe, particularly for infants, young children, pregnant women, and individuals with compromised immune systems. These complications can range from ear infections and diarrhea to pneumonia, encephalitis (brain swelling), and even death. The current CDC data shows that approximately one in five people who contract measles require hospitalization.
The DHEC is emphasizing the importance of vaccination as the most effective means of preventing measles. The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is highly effective, providing approximately 97% protection after two doses. The CDC recommends that children receive their first MMR dose between 12 and 15 months of age, and the second dose between 4 and 6 years of age.
However, vaccination rates in some areas of South Carolina have been declining, raising concerns about a potential resurgence of preventable diseases. "We're seeing a worrying trend of vaccine hesitancy," says Dr. David Lee, DHEC's State Epidemiologist. "Misinformation and a lack of understanding about the safety and efficacy of vaccines are contributing to lower coverage rates. This puts our community at risk, especially the most vulnerable among us."
Following the Walmart exposure, DHEC is urging anyone who visited the store during the specified timeframe and hasn't been vaccinated or is unsure of their vaccination status to contact their healthcare provider. Those who develop symptoms should immediately call their doctor before visiting a clinic or hospital to prevent potential spread of the virus.
DHEC is also actively working with local school districts and healthcare facilities to reinforce the importance of vaccination and provide access to MMR vaccines. Several free vaccination clinics are being planned throughout Greenville County in the coming weeks. Details will be posted on the DHEC website ([ www.scdhec.gov ]) and through local media outlets.
The situation in Greenville serves as a stark reminder that measles remains a global health threat. Maintaining high vaccination rates is essential not only to protect individuals but also to safeguard the health of the entire community. Public health officials are pleading with residents to review their vaccination records and take action to ensure they - and their families - are adequately protected. The DHEC is also providing resources to combat misinformation about vaccines, urging residents to rely on credible sources such as the CDC and WHO for accurate information.
