WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA - March 9th, 2026 - The town of West Springfield has officially transitioned to a new, state-of-the-art emergency alert system, replacing its previous infrastructure with Everbridge, a leading provider of critical event management solutions. The move, announced today by Town Manager Paul Vaconas, represents a significant upgrade in the town's ability to communicate with residents during emergencies, and importantly, marks a shift towards a more interactive and responsive public safety model.

For years, West Springfield relied on a legacy emergency notification system which, while functional, lacked the robustness and multi-channel capabilities demanded by modern emergency management best practices. The limitations of the old system became increasingly apparent during recent severe weather events and localized incidents, highlighting the need for a more reliable and comprehensive solution. Everbridge addresses these concerns by offering a unified platform capable of disseminating critical information across a wide range of communication channels - including SMS text messages, email, phone calls (both voice and text), and integration with the town's existing mobile application.

But the upgrade is more than just a channel expansion. A key feature of the new system is its geographical targeting capability. Unlike older broadcast systems that sent alerts to all residents regardless of proximity to the event, Everbridge allows for hyper-local alerts. Residents can now register specific locations - their home, workplace, school, or even frequently visited areas - ensuring they only receive notifications relevant to their immediate surroundings. This targeted approach minimizes alert fatigue and ensures that vital information isn't lost in a flood of irrelevant warnings. For example, residents in the eastern section of town will only receive alerts pertaining to incidents in that area, while those in the west will receive geographically specific warnings. This precision is especially crucial in a town with varied topography and potential for localized emergencies, like flash flooding in low-lying areas or power outages impacting specific neighborhoods.

Perhaps the most innovative aspect of the Everbridge implementation in West Springfield is the introduction of two-way communication. Traditionally, emergency alert systems have been largely unidirectional - the town sends out a message, and residents receive it. Everbridge, however, allows residents to respond to alerts, confirming receipt, reporting their status (safe, unsafe, needing assistance), and providing valuable situational awareness to emergency responders. Registration for the Everbridge system is simple and can be completed through the town's official website (www.westsprigfieldma.gov/alerts) or via the West Springfield mobile app, available for both iOS and Android devices. Town officials are encouraging all residents to register, even those who previously received alerts through the older system, to ensure accurate and up-to-date contact information. A dedicated help desk has also been established to assist residents with the registration process and answer any questions they may have. The town is planning a series of public information sessions over the next few weeks to demonstrate the new system's features and benefits.

The move by West Springfield follows a growing national trend towards more sophisticated emergency communication systems. Several cities and counties across the country have already adopted Everbridge and similar platforms, reporting significant improvements in public safety outcomes and resident engagement. West Springfield is now positioned as a regional leader in emergency preparedness, setting a new standard for proactive and responsive public safety communication.
