  • Thekwini Municipality has earmarked approximately R10 billion to restore its water, electricity, and solid waste management infrastructure, aiming to enhance service delivery and ensure long-term sustainability.

The eThekwini Municipality in South Africa has allocated R10 billion to rebuild and repair municipal infrastructure damaged by the April 2022 floods. This funding will be used to restore essential services like water, sanitation, electricity, and roads, with a significant portion, R1.5 billion, specifically earmarked for water and sanitation repairs. The municipality has already spent R600 million on immediate repairs and is seeking additional funding from the National Treasury. The floods caused extensive damage, leading to the loss of life and displacement of residents, and the recovery efforts are expected to take several years. The city is also focusing on improving disaster management and resilience to prevent future catastrophes.
