UK to conduct zero based review on government spending, deputy finance minister says
- Britain's deputy finance minister Darren Jones said on Tuesday the government would conduct the first zero based review of spending in 17 years.
The UK government is set to undertake a comprehensive "zero-based" review of its spending, as announced by Deputy Finance Minister Gareth Davies on January 21, 2025. This review will scrutinize all government expenditures, starting from a baseline of zero, to assess the necessity and efficiency of each program. The initiative aims to identify savings and redirect funds towards priority areas like defense, health, and education, amidst pressures to reduce the national debt. This approach, which has been used in the past by companies like Unilever and Heinz, will involve examining every department's budget to ensure that taxpayer money is being used effectively. The review is part of a broader strategy to manage public finances more stringently, especially in light of the economic challenges following Brexit and the global economic impacts of recent years.
