Portugal to import more US, Nigerian LNG, aims to end Russian supply
- Portugal plans to increase purchases of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States and Nigeria as it aims to end already dwindling supplies from Russia, Environment Minister Maria da Graca Carvalho said on Tuesday.
Portugal plans to increase its imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States and Nigeria as part of its strategy to end reliance on Russian gas supplies by 2025. This decision comes in response to the European Union's broader initiative to reduce dependency on Russian energy due to geopolitical tensions, particularly following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Portugal's energy company, Galp Energia, has already secured a deal with U.S. LNG exporter Cheniere Energy for long-term supply, and is exploring further contracts with other American and Nigerian suppliers. This shift aims to diversify Portugal's energy sources, enhance energy security, and align with the EU's goal of achieving greater energy independence.
