University of Texas President Jay Hartzell will become SMU's next president. SMU's Board of Trustees approved Hartzell's hire Tuesday and he will become SMU's next president effective June 1, 2025. The announcement comes after SMU President R.

Dr. David J. Chard, currently the president of the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), has been appointed as the next president of Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, Texas. His appointment was announced by SMU's Board of Trustees, and he will succeed Dr. R. Gerald Turner, who has been SMU's president for 30 years. Chard, who has led UTSA since 2017, will begin his tenure at SMU on July 1, 2024. Under his leadership at UTSA, the university saw significant growth in enrollment, research funding, and campus development.
