Jay Hartzell has been appointed as the 11th president of Southern Methodist University (SMU), effective from July 1, 2022. Previously, Hartzell served as the dean of the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin, where he was recognized for his leadership in enhancing the school's academic and research profile. His selection followed a comprehensive search process led by a committee of trustees, faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Hartzell's appointment comes at a time when SMU is focusing on its strategic plan, "SMU Ignited: Boldly Shaping the Future," aiming to advance the university's academic excellence, research, and community engagement. His background in business education, combined with his experience in strategic planning and fundraising, positions him well to lead SMU into its next phase of development.
