  • HANOI: A Vietnamese property tycoon is in a race for her life to come up with $US9 billion ($14 billion) to escape the death penalty for masterminding the world's biggest bank fraud.

Vietnamese property tycoon Truong My Lan has been sentenced to death for orchestrating a massive $44 billion fraud, one of the largest financial scams in history. She was convicted of embezzlement, bribery, and violating banking regulations at the Saigon Joint Stock Commercial Bank (SCB), where she effectively controlled operations through a network of proxies. Lan's scheme involved siphoning off funds through thousands of fake loan applications, leading to losses estimated at $27 billion. Despite her conviction, Lan has been given a month to repay $27 billion to avoid the death penalty, a sum that includes the misappropriated funds plus interest. This case has highlighted significant issues within Vietnam's banking sector and has led to widespread public and governmental scrutiny.
