  • COLUMBUS, Ohio - An Ohio House committee on Tuesday passed legislation that would compel property managers in apartments and other recipients of state affordable housing tax credits to verify the immigrations status of their tenants.

The Ohio House committee has passed a bill that would mandate landlords to verify the immigration status of tenants in subsidized housing units. This legislation, if enacted, would require property owners to check the legal status of prospective renters before allowing them to occupy units that benefit from state or federal housing assistance. Proponents argue that this measure aims to ensure that housing subsidies are allocated to legal residents, potentially reducing fraud and ensuring fair distribution of limited resources. Critics, however, contend that the bill could lead to discrimination, increase administrative burdens on landlords, and potentially deter immigrants from seeking necessary housing, thereby exacerbating housing insecurity among vulnerable populations. The bill now moves to the full Ohio House for further debate and a vote.
