  • A woman who lost her $40,000 house deposit to scammers has warned that it could happen to anyone after sophisticated spoofing technology was used to fool her into thinking she was talking to her bank.

A Melbourne woman lost her $40,000 house deposit to a sophisticated scam where fraudsters impersonated her conveyancer. The scam began with a text message from what appeared to be her conveyancer's number, asking her to update her bank details for a property settlement. She received a follow-up call from someone claiming to be from the conveyancer's office, who provided detailed personal information to gain her trust. The scammer then instructed her to transfer the money to a new account for security reasons. After the transfer, she contacted her real conveyancer, only to discover the scam. The bank, ANZ, has since stated they are investigating the matter, highlighting the increasing sophistication of such scams where fraudsters use real-time information to deceive victims.
