JCP&L-Related Foundation Contributes $100,000 to American Red Cross Chapters in New Jersey -- MORRISTOWN, N.J., Nov. 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

MORRISTOWN, N.J., Nov. 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The FirstEnergy Foundation has contributed $100,000 to the Jersey Coast Chapter of the American Red Cross to support relief efforts for residents of the state affected by Hurricane Sandy.  FirstEnergy (NYSE: [ FE ]) is the parent company of JCP&L.

The Jersey Coast Chapter, which covers Monmouth and Ocean counties, will share the grant with other Red Cross chapters in hard-hit areas of New Jersey, including:

  • Central New Jersey Chapter (Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex and Mercer counties)
  • Northern New Jersey Chapter (Sussex and Passaic counties)
  • New Jersey Crossroads Chapter (Morris, Union and Warren counties, and the communities of Millburn and Short Hills)
  • Burlington County Chapter (Communities of Chesterfield, New Hanover, North Hanover, Pemberton Boro, Pemberton Twp, South Hampton, Springfield Twp, Woodland, and Wrightstown)

Hurricane Sandy slammed into New Jersey on October 29 with winds exceeding 80 mph and a storm surge of nine feet atop high tide.  Vast areas along the New Jersey shore suffered severe damage, with popular tourist attractions and seaside homes destroyed.  JCP&L's electric system suffered severe damage, knocking out service to more than one million customers, taking more than half of the company's substations offline with flooding and high winds that damaged more than 50 of the company's high voltage lines.

"Hurricane Sandy had a devastating effect on our region," said Don Lynch, President of JCP&L. "We're glad to provide assistance to the American Red Cross - Jersey Coast at this time, when help is most desperately needed."

The FirstEnergy Foundation also will match all gifts employees make to the Red Cross during this crisis.

The FirstEnergy Foundation is funded solely by FirstEnergy Corp. and provides support to non-profit, tax-exempt health and human services agencies; educational organizations; cultural and arts programs and institutions; and civic groups in areas served by FirstEnergy's 10 electric operating companies and in areas where the company has facilities.  Foundation contributions support programs and initiatives that help ensure the safety and health of the community, promote economic development, advance professional development, and support employee involvement and investment.

JCP&L is a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp.  JCP&L serves 1.1 million customers in the counties of Burlington, Essex, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren.

FirstEnergy is a diversified energy company dedicated to safety, reliability and operational excellence.  Its 10 electric distribution companies form one of the nation's largest investor-owned electric systems, serving customers in Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and West Virginia.  Its generation subsidiaries control more than 20,000 megawatts of capacity from a diversified mix of scrubbed coal, non-emitting nuclear, natural gas, hydro, pumped-storage hydro and other renewables.  Follow FirstEnergy on Twitter @FirstEnergyCorp.
