Paul Adams Receives American Society of Mechanical Engineering Leadership Award

[ ]

CHICAGO, Aug. 15, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Paul Adams, Pratt & Whitney's senior vice president of Operations & Engineering, was named recipient of the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineering) 2012 Leadership Award for advancing the use of computers and information in engineering. Pratt & Whitney is a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: [ UTX ]) company.

Adams was recognized by the ASME Computers & Information in Engineering Division (CIE) for integrating state-of-the-art computing resources into Pratt & Whitney's product design, manufacturing engineering, quality testing operations and supply chain to achieve superior, reliable jet engine products that are second to none in the world. In particular, he has championed and led the investment in computing platforms that enable effective use and sharing of information across Pratt & Whitney's global engineering teams.

The ASME CIE Leadership award, established in 1987, recognizes an individual in industry or government for outstanding leadership in advancing the use of computers in engineering practice.

"The ASME CIE Leadership Award is the premier recognition for individuals who've created paradigm shifts in the use of information technology in engineering applications. Paul's role in integrating advanced computing into every facet of Pratt & Whitney's design, manufacturing, assembly and operations, during the last 13 years, has revolutionized modern manufacturing technologies," said University of Connecticut interim Provost and former School of Engineering Dean Mun Choi, who recommended Adams for the prestigious award.

The effort led by Adams enabled Pratt & Whitney engineers to fully integrate the internet and intranet for effective collaborations with colleagues throughout the design continuum. The investment in information technology and the change in the culture of isolated activities enabled innovative projects that integrated complex design, manufacture and assembly. This process was applied in the design and manufacture of the award-winning [ PurePower® ] family of engines.

Adams was recently inducted into the distinguished Connecticut Academy of Science & Engineering for his outstanding contributions to jet propulsion technology. He was recognized for his technical leadership in the engineering development and production of game-changing technological products such as Pratt & Whitney's PurePower® Geared Turbofan™ (GTF) engine and [ the F135 engine ] that powers the F-35 Lightning II fighter.

Adams has more than 30 years of leadership in Engineering and Program Management with extensive, global experience in the aircraft engine industry.  His responsibilities include new product development, technology strategy, manufacturing operations, and supply chain management.  .

Adams serves on the advisory boards of the University of Michigan Aerospace Engineering Department and the University of Connecticut School Of Engineering. He completed the Stanford Executive Program through the Stanford Graduate Business School and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan.
